North American EMS book-to-bill remains above parity.
The Global Electronics Association reported a May 2026 North American EMS book-to-bill ratio of 1.36, above parity for nine consecutive months. May EMS shipments grew 5.2% year over year, while year-to-date shipments rose 9.6%, indicating resilient electronics manufacturing services demand.
In its May 2026 North American EMS statistics, the Global Electronics Association reported a three-month book-to-bill ratio of 1.36 and a one-month ratio of 1.08. The association explains that a ratio above 1 generally means current order demand is ahead of billed sales and can be a positive indicator for sales growth over the next three to 12 months.
The release also showed May EMS shipments up 5.2% year over year and 3.4% sequentially, with year-to-date shipments up 9.6%. Orders were more volatile: May bookings increased 28.7% year over year but declined 42.9% from the prior month. The association cautioned that monthly booking changes can reflect seasonal and short-term volatility and should be read as a trend.
For customers needing PCBA design, prototyping, pilot runs, and production ramp, sustained EMS demand means SMT, test, assembly, and line resources should be scheduled earlier. Wireless products also require RF tuning, functional tests, firmware programming, and product aging, and a bottleneck in any one step can affect delivery.
A more reliable project approach is to consider production test points, fixtures, substitute parts, and packaging flow during the prototype stage instead of deriving manufacturing conditions after functional validation. This shortens the gap between prototype approval and first-batch delivery.
EMS delivery for keyboards and mice is more than SMT completion. Keyboards require matrix continuity tests, switch-socket or membrane contact checks, RGB LED tests, Bluetooth pairing tests, 2.4 GHz dongle pairing, and multi-device switching validation. Mice also require sensor tracking, button and side-key checks, wheel encoding, DPI levels, polling rate, and low-power sleep/wake validation.
When EMS book-to-bill remains above 1, pilot-run windows and test resources are more likely to tighten. Wireless peripheral projects should define firmware programming, dongle-binding rules, MAC address or serial-number writing, RF consistency sampling, and post-packaging retest plans during EVT/DVT instead of adding fixtures close to mass production.
